To Screen or Not To Screen: Understanding How the Recent Changes in Breast Cancer Screening Guidelines Affect You – February 3rd, 2011

Presented by prominent Memorial Sloan Kettering breast surgeon Dr. Alexandra Heerdt

The Latest on Breast Cancer Screening from Top Surgeon

When it comes to breast cancer, the most invasive cancer for women, there are still conflicting reports about screening, specifically the types of tests, who should get them, how often and at what ages. Since one in eight women will develop breast cancer, the confusion adds more stress as women struggle to find the best preventative practices.

To shed light on this important topic, Sole Ryeders & Friends brought in Memorial Sloan-Kettering’s Dr. Alexandra Heerdt to speak at a special program “To Screen or Not To Screen: Understanding How the Recent Changes in Breast Cancer Screening Guidelines Affect You.” The event was held at Wainwright House February 3.

One of the country’s top breast surgeons, Dr. Heerdt stands by the American Cancer Society guidelines, which call for baseline mammograms at 40 and yearly if one is in good health and clinical breast exams for women ages 20 to 40, at least every three years. She presented extensive data that proved early detection through mammography, which is still considered “the gold standard,” is key in extending lives, as well as saving lives. “We don’t want to find cancer when we feel it; we want to find it before.” She also cited numerous risk factors, but said one of the most significant is family history.

For those at high risk, Dr. Heerdt recommends ultra sound and MRI screening, and in some cases, genetic counseling so women can obtain more detailed information to make better decisions.

Dr. Heerdt, who was awarded Mother of the Year by the American Cancer Society in 2009, is optimistic about the future, especially because of new data from ongoing research in the field and continuing advancements in technology.
